The SBBS "Gesundheit und Soziales - Medical College - Jena is a modern educational institution.

At present there are more than 800 students attending the College to become general, pediatric or geriatric nurses, midwives, lab-technicians, radiographers and pharmacists.

Our school is situated in Jena - a city with a population of 100,000 inhabitants in Thuringia. Thuringia is one of the new German Federal States, nearly exactly in the middle of the reunited Germany.

Jena has been a university town since 1558. Its Friedrich-Schiller-University has been connected with the works of Martin Luther and great German philosophers such as Hegel, Schelling and Fichte.

The university has played a part in the development of the natural and medical sciences - with Haeckel, Abbe or Doebereiner. Jena is also kown for its development of the optical industries. The great inventor and engineer Carl Zeiss began producing microscopes for industrial and scientific purposes in our town in the late 19th century.

The necessity of a profound training for qualified medical personnel was as well a result of the fast growth of medicine both as an academic and clinical subject in Jena.

Therefore the roots of the Medical College go back to the early 1920`s when a school for laboratory technicians and radiographers was opened under the supervision of the university.

The range of professions was especially extended in the 1960´s.

Nowadays the College is a state owned school working closely together with the university clinic and the department of medicine at Friedrich-Schiller-University.

The "SBBS Gesundheit und Soziales" is currently trying to establish partnership programes with similar institutions in the UK, the Netherlands, and the United States.
